What are the possible side effects?

Side effects vary from person to person. Sildenafil commonly causes headache, flushing, indigestion, nasal congestion, dizziness, nausea, and temporary vision changes such as a blue tint or increased sensitivity to light. More serious risks can include a prolonged or painful erection lasting more than 4 hours, sudden vision or hearing loss, severe low blood pressure, fainting, chest pain, or allergic reactions. Sildenafil should not be used with nitrate medications or riociguat because the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure, and additional caution may be needed with certain heart conditions or medications that lower blood pressure. When do I take it?

Ahead of time, on the schedule your provider sets, and once in a day — never twice. Timing is part of the prescription rather than something to work out yourself, and a heavy meal beforehand changes it, so your provider will go through that with you.

Will it work every time?

It works with arousal, not instead of it. If it is not doing what you want, that is a dose conversation rather than a dead end — message your provider and they can change the dose, or move you to tadalafil.

How is it different from tadalafil?

Both are PDE5 inhibitors and both are plain tablets. Sildenafil is taken ahead of time; tadalafil can be taken ahead of time or as a smaller daily dose. Which one you are prescribed is your provider’s decision, made from your history and everything else you take.

What must I not take with it?

Sildenafil and tadalafil are PDE5 inhibitors. Do not take either with a nitrate medicine or riociguat — together they can cause a severe drop in blood pressure. A licensed provider reviews everything you take before deciding.

Certain heart conditions, alpha-blockers and other blood-pressure medicines need extra caution too.

When should I get medical help?
